South African hero Nelson Mandela commemorated with Cape Town sculpture

Cape Town, Jul 24 (efe-epa).- A statue of one of South Africa's most beloved figures, the anti-apartheid activist, former president and Nobel laureate Nelson Mandela, was unveiled Tuesday in Cape Town.

The bronze statue, made by artists Xhanti Mpakama and Barry Jackson, is positioned on the balcony where he stood when he gave his first address as a free man following 27 years in prison.

It was unveiled by Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille with Western Cape Premier Helen Zille.

His 100th birthday was celebrated throughout the country on Wednesday.

Mandela, who was born on July 18, 1918 and died on Dec. 5, 2013, was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 with Frederik Willem de Klerk, South Africa's white former president who in the early 1990s helped dismantle apartheid "when he realized that the apartheid system was leading to both economic and political bankruptcy," according to the Nobel Prize's website.
