UK's London Zoo to celebrate World Lion Day

London, Aug 9 (efe-epa).- London Zoo on Thursday hailed the rising numbers of Asiatic lions as it geared up to mark World Lion Day.

Lionesses Heidi, Indi and Rubi were given specially-designed brightly-colored scented balls to play with, allowing them to exercise their powerful sense of smell, the zoo said.

"Asiatic lions are growing in numbers, but with approximately only 600 Asiatic lions left in the wild, our work to save this incredible species continues," zoo manager Mark Habben said in a statement.

Habben also acknowledged support from Liontrust, a fund management firm, which has "helped us to build a magnificent home for our big cats and our ongoing work in the Gir National Park" located in Gujarat, India.

World Lion Day will be observed internationally on Friday in celebration of the king of the jungle as well as to raise awareness about the need to protect the big cat.
