Hungary's Sziget Festival brings big names in music, greener living to fans

Budapest, Aug 9 (efe-epa).- A week-long festival taking place on an island in the heart of Budapest was on Thursday offering music-lovers a chance to see performances by international artists, including Gorillaz, Bonobo Live and Seasick Steve.

Visitors from over 100 countries were expected at this year's edition of the festival, taking place under the theme "Love Revolution."

"One of the Love Revolution's main messages is about environmental consciousness and sustainable development," the festival said on its site.

United States rapper Kendrick Lamar and Sweden's Lykke Li opened the 26th edition of the festival on Wednesday evening.

Other headliners over the course of the week were Dua Lipa, Lana del Rey and Arctic Monkeys.

The festival's name "Sziget," the Hungarian word for "island," refers to the event's location on a landmass in the middle of the River Danube between the two sides making up the capital: Buda and Pest.

Looking after the planet was given more prominence at this year's Sziget Festival, which featured reusable plastic cups and efforts to cut down on the use of drinking straws.

New to this year's edition was an environmentally-friendly campsite with room to accommodate up to 200 people.

"We will be able to reuse about 30-40 percent of the waste produced during the event," the organizers said.
