Mexico City, Sep 12 (EFE).- Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta is reflecting on the nature of political violence after portraying a Peruvian rebel in "Bel Canto," which is based on a real-life hostage hostage crisis.

"Resorting to violence is horrible, I think it is the worst path," Huerta, 37, said in an interview with EFE. "But it is sometimes the only option left to many people. It's sad, because, with violence, nobody wins; everybody loses."

In "Bel Canto" - a film inspired by the events of the Dec. 17, 1996 Japanese embassy hostage crisis in Peru, in which MRTA rebels held 72 people hostage for 126 days - the actor portrays Commander Benjamin, a man forced to take "desperate" actions as he "fights for what he thinks is fair, for people's rights.

Huerta said that the role offered him an opportunity to reaffirm the notion that it is important to "defend one's life, culture, identity and welfare" which he believes are often under threat in Latin America.

He added that it is well-advised to listen to those who take up arms in similar situations in order to foster dialog and deter violent acts, adding that, even though the film "doesn't justify" the events, it does compel moviegoers to put themselves in the hostage-takers' shoes.

"Both hostages and hijackers found common ground from a human perspective," the actor, who also portrays Guadalajara Cartel boss Rafael Caro Quintero in the upcoming season of the Netflix series "Narcos: Mexico", said.

"Bel Canto" - which stars Julianne Moore and Ken Watanabe - is scheduled to be released on Sept. 14 by Screen Media Films.
