"The Favorite" film cinches 12 nominations; "Roma", three more tied with 7

London, Jan 9 (efe-epa).- A period drama starring English actress Olivia Colman obtained a dozen nominations for this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards only days after she won a Golden Globe for her role as Queen Anne in "The Favorite," the organization said Wednesday.

The films "Roma," by Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón and "A star is born," with Lady Gaga in the leading role, collected seven nominations each, the festival organizers said.

"The Favourite is nominated in 12 categories. Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma and A Star Is Born each have seven nominations; Vice has six, BlacKkKlansman has five, and Cold War and Green Book have four each," BAFTA said in a statement. "Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen of Scots and Stan & Ollie have three nominations each," it added.

The Favorite is an Irish production focused on the turbulent relationship between the United Kingdom's Queen Anne with two cousins attempting to win her favor at court in the early 18th century.

The Favourite was nominated in the following categories: Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Leading Actress, (2) Best Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Editing and Yorgos Lanthimos as Best Director.

Roma has been nominated as Best Film, Film Not in the English Language, Director, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, and Editing. Alfonso Cuarón is nominated in all of these categories.

The film is also nominated for its Production Design.

Roma is the first film produced by streaming platform Netflix to aspire winning a BAFTA award.

A Star Is Born has also been nominated in seven categories; Leading Actor, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Sound, Best Film and Leading Actress for Lady Gaga. Director Bradley Cooper is nominated in five of these categories.

The Bafta awards ceremony, hosted by Joanna Lumley, is scheduled to take place on Feb. 10 at London's Royal Albert Hall and is the most important film industry rendezvous prior to Hollywood's own Academy Awards.

Also competing for the Best Director award along with Alberto Cuaron (Roma) and Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) is Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman, Pawel Pawlikowski for Cold War, and Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born.

Apart from Olivia Colman's Best Actress nomination, Glenn Close has also been tapped for her role in "The Wife"; Lady Gaga for her work in A Star is Born; Melissa McCarthy for "Can you ever forgive me?"; and Viola Davis for her amazing role in "Widows."

This year's BAFTA Best Actor nominations go to Rami Malek for his role as Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Bradley Cooper in A star is born; Christian Bale for Vice; Vigo Mortensen for Green Book and Steve Coogan, for his Stan Laurel role in Stan & Ollie.
