3D Van Gogh show in Spain plunges viewer into Dutch artist's complex world

Barcelona, Mar 14 (efe-epa).- A touring three-dimensional exhibition that recreates Vincent van Gogh's art through projections, photographs and interactive apps opened Thursday in Barcelona.

"Meet Vincent van Gogh Experience," plunges viewers into the complex world of the Dutch painter, complete with reproductions of key locations such as the Le Tambourin cafe in Paris and the Yellow House in the southeastern French city of Arles where he painted his Sunflowers series.

Huge projections of his artworks and fragments of film are accompanied by audio clips in the immersive experience.

Created by the Van Gogh Museum in The Netherlands, the event is showing at a venue in Barcelona's old harbor and is set to travel to South Korea for Asian fans later in the year.

"With this new location for Meet Vincent van Gogh, we support our mission to make the life and work of Van Gogh and his contemporaries, and the art of his time, accessible to millions of people all around the world," Adriaan Dönszelmann, Managing Director of the Van Gogh Museum, said in a statement.

The way the exhibition has been designed, which relies enormously on digital products, means it can be shown at more than one venue at any given time.

"We have two sets of the experience and are proud to already announce that the second set will also be on show this Spring," Dönszelmann continued.

He added: "Just now the word is out that this set will travel to Seoul, Korea for all Asian Van Gogh fans to see."

The Van Gogh Museum chose this innovative way of touring its collection due to various reasons, one of them being the fragility of its archive and the complications and large costs attached to transporting original artworks.

The immersive project, which the museum co-created with Spanish company Proactiv, also helps bring in revenue for the museum, which relies on ticket sales to generate income.

The experience is curated across six chapters, which have been meticulously created by some of the museum's top experts.

Experiences include a recreation of his studio in Arles and the opportunity to paint like the master himself with interactive applications where viewers move their limbs swiping across a large screen to recreate the artist's characteristic brushstrokes in his trademark palette.

The exhibition will run at Barcelona's Port Vell from Mar. 14 to Jun. 2.
