Playmobil exhibit reviews Bolivian history as told by "klickies"

By Gabriel Romano

La Paz, Apr 12 (efe-epa).- The Playmobil dolls known as "klickies" are seen as Spanish conquistadors, Bolivian soldiers and Incas, bring back battles between Bolivia and Chile, and reflect life in Bolivia as far as watching "Game of Thrones" on TV, in a La Paz exhibit that shows the versatility of these world-famous figures.

An exhibit at the Tambo Quirquincho Museum in La Paz by 19 collectors of these delightful figures seeks to motivate younger generations not to lose the magic of interacting with Playmobil characters to invent stories.

Collectors from different parts of Bolivia, all members of the Playmo Club, have brought to the exhibit some 20,000 pieces of their treasures that recreate scenes both historical and fun.

Among the more eye-catching is a portrayal of the Bolivian Colorados, a historic military regiment that served as the presidential guard, and which collector Gonzalo Lema has represented by putting into uniform around 100 Playmobil figures.

The Colorados are "the most attractive" display of this fourth version of the exhibit, its organizer Enrique Montoya, a Playmobil collector for 24 years, told EFE.

The Colorados klickies, wearing red hats and jackets, recreate a scene in the old Plaza Murillo of La Paz, as seen in the early 19th century with the old houses that were there during the first years of the republic.

Another attractive scene is a stop on the La Paz city bus line, the Pumakatari, which shows an everyday image of people neatly lined up behind a very flirty girl who is the first to get on a bus.

Another attraction is the staging of the La Paz soccer classic between Bolivar and The Strongest, which in addition to the players shows the fans waving flags and wearing jackets with their team colors.

Another gallery shows an encounter between Spanish colonists and the Incas.

The conquistadors with their steel helmets, swords and long beards, some on horseback, face a native procession carrying their leader, the Sapa Inca, on a throne.

Represented in another space is the Battle of the Peak of the Alliance, which pitted Bolivian and Peruvian troops against the Chileans during the 19th century War of the Pacific.

Another of the more attractive displays is that of the famous television series "Game of Thrones," which contains the largest number of pieces and medieval details like knights on horseback, nobles and royalty, all within a giant fortress.

Playmobil figures and scenes are the work of Germany's Brandstatter Group whose 7.5-centimeters-tall klickies, with moving parts like the head, arms and legs, have won fans all over the world since the 1970s.
