The Ark at New York's JFK airport opens for four-legged travellers

New York, Apr 12 (efe-epa).- Two adorable dogs were ambassadors of The Ark, an "oasis for pets" at New York’s JKF airport where animals can rest and recover from jet lag.

The pair, called Aiden and Tucker, seemed to love the attention and posing for the cameras.

The Collie and Cocker Spaniel/Poodle cross were also a hit with passengers in Terminal 4 at the one of the world’s busiest airports, with a stream of people stopping to pet the furry duo.

Elizabeth Schuette, managing director of The ark, told Efe that the service provides a "healthy transportation environment" for animals in transit.

“Our most well-known venture is the Ark Pet Oasis and we have dogs and cats and all kinds of animals that come to JFK,” she added.

The facility is not just for pets but is also in charge of managing the treatment of animals waiting for customs inspection, including dogs, horses and live cattle.

“They're generally with us for a very short time, from two hours up to over night, generally speaking,” Schuette said.

“We provide food and water, we have clean kennels, we take them outside and walk them, we play with them. And we just generally try to give them relaxation for their travel.”

The centre is open to dogs, cats, ferrets, birds and even sloths for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

"The most unusual was something called a capybara, I don't know if you're familiar, capybara is basically a giant rat,” Schuette added.

Thanks to this initiative, the JFK is the US’s most pet-friendly airport, it also has an outdoor yard and a garden for the animals to relax in.

CEO of JFKAIT, Roel Hunink, said the airport is committed to the safety and comfort of its customers, which also includes those with four legs.

“We have always considered two things the most important for customers: the security of our travellers and their experiences,” Hunink added.

“It does not stop there, we no longer only see people travelling but also more and more animals and we also want to take care of them.”
