Sydney, Australia, May 13 (efe-epa).- New Zealand's prime minister on Monday called for a global solution to stop the circulation of terrorist or extremely violent content across social media platforms as happened during the terror attack against two mosques on Mar.15.

"We know social media platforms are global - that means the way we eliminate violent extremist content online needs to be global too," Jacinda Ardern said in a video shared on social media before her visit to Paris where she is set to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron during a summit on social media.

Leaders from around the world and representatives of tech companies are to attend the summit where Ardern is expected to urge them to join the Christchurch Call to commit themselves to eliminate extremist violent content on internet.

The suspect in the shootings, the Australian Brenton Tarrant, reportedly live streamed the incident for 17 minutes while he killed some 50 Muslims inside the mosques with semi-automatic weapons in Christchurch.

"What happened in Christchurch was unique, in one particular way. This was a terrorist act that was designed to go viral, the terrorist, he live streamed the attack. The video of the aftermath was altered multiple times in order to enable it to get around the automatic tie down," she said, adding that the video was shared on Facebook itself over 1.5 million times.

Ardern said that many New Zealanders saw the video, "not necessarily because they were seeking it out but because the proliferation of it was so extreme."

She reiterated that it was necessary to prevent the sharing of terrorist content and extremely violent content online.

The prime minister emphasized that the measures adopted, including technological solutions, should "maintain a free and open and accessible internet," for users. EFE-EPA
