World's top eatery: Argentine-owned Mirazur restaurant on French Riviera

Singapore, Jun 25 (efe-epa).- The Mirazur restaurant in Menton, France, on the French Riviera, owned by Argentina's Mauro Colagreco, on Tuesday appeared in the No. 1 spot on Restaurant magazine's influential list - The World's 50 Best Restaurants - while Danish chef Rene Redzepi's Noma restaurant in Copenhagen, which has won on four occasions, took second place.
In third place on the list published in Singapore on Tuesday is Basque restaurant Asador Etxebarri, owned by Bittor Arguinzoniz, while Peruvian Virgilio Martinez's Central restaurant in Lima once again occupies sixth place.
Among the 10 top restaurants on the list, Basque Andoni Luis Aduriz's Mugaritz jumps from ninth to seventh place and Barcelona eatery Disfrutar, owned by Eduard Xatruch, Oriol Castro and Mateu Casañas, all former chefs with elBulli, rises nine spots into ninth place.
Chef Mitsuharu Tsumura's Maido restaurant in Lima, which fuses Peruvian and Japanese cuisine, dropped three spots into 10th place.
The only Asian representative among the top 10 was Indian chef Gaggan Anand's Gaggan in Bangkok, which for three years has been named the best restaurant in Asia, in 2018 was in fifth place on the Restaurant list but this year rises into fourth place.
The judging panel creating the famous list, published since 2002 by the British gastronomy magazine Restaurant, decided this year to make a somewhat controversial change in the parameters for ranking the restaurants. No restaurant that had previously been named the world's top eatery could be included on the list, and thus nine names were excluded.
Italy's Osteria Franciscana, owned by chef Massimo Bottura, had won last year but was excluded this time around, along with Spain's El Celler de Can Roca, which had won in both 2013 and 2015 and came in second in 2018. And New York's Eleven Madison Park, which won in 2017 and came in fourth last year, was also out in the cold this time.
These three former winners, however, were included in a new category - The Best of the Best - which also includes the iconic elBulli owned by Ferran Adria, which had headed the Restaurant list for six years, and the other restaurants that had won on other occasions.
"It's a good decision. It's good for those of us who have been first and for the rest. In this way, those of us who were on top are ceasing to be a lid" for the others, Joan Roca, who along with her brothers Josep and Jordi, heads El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, told EFE.
The ranking is prepared by tabulating the votes of 1,040 chefs, restaurant critics and traveling gourmets selected by Restaurant magazine and this year there was yet another new feature in compiling the list: For the first time the voting panel was comprised of equal numbers of men and women.
The gala on Tuesday evening at the Marina Bay Sands convention center in Singapore will be where the formal announcement of the rankings will be made and several previously announced awards presented such as World's Best Chef, which will go to Mexico's Daniela Soto-Innes, with New York's Cosme restaurant, and the American Express Icon Award, which will go to Spain's Jose Andres to recognize his culinary and humanitarian career.
In preparing the list, Restaurant magazine divides the world into 26 regions and a judging panel of 40 people is selected for each, with each member casting 10 votes, including four for restaurants outside their own region that they have visited during the previous 18 months.
