UNESCO declares Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture as world heritage

Baku, July 7 (efe-epa).- Several works by iconic American architect Frank Lloyd Wright were declared World Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on Sunday.

Eight buildings designed by the famous architect were added to the UNESCO world heritage list by the World Heritage Committee during their forty-third conference held in the capital of Azerbaijan.

The Committee said in a press release that each of the eight buildings of the architect "offers innovative solutions to the needs for housing, worship, work or leisure."

Wright (1867-1959) is considered the forerunner of what is known as "organic architecture," based on achieving harmony between construction and nature.

The World Heritage Committee included eight buildings designed by Wright during various stages of his prolific career and located throughout the United States, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Fallingwater house in Pennsylvania.

Other emblematic works of the famous architect were also recognized, such as the Unity Temple and the Frederick C. Robie House located in Illinois, the Taliesin and the Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House in Wisconsin, the Hollyhock House in California, and Wright’s desert laboratory and house Taliesin West, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Jacobs House is considered one of his first "Usonian" houses, a style developed by the visionary of new American architecture between 1936 and the 1950s to reduce the cost of housing for the middle class, who had suffered the consequences of the Great Depression in 1929.

The "Usonian" buildings designed by Wright, with outdoor parking spaces and American kitchens, soon became popular among the US citizen, making them common in the country to this day.

The World Heritage Committee also highlighted the importance of Wright’s architecture "on a global stage" during the first half of the 20th century and beyond.

His work, according to the Committee, changed the way how architecture and design are conceived throughout the world and it continues to do so to this day.

"Wright's work from this period had a strong impact on the development of modern architecture in Europe," the Committee added.

They also pointed out that the buildings included in the World Heritage List range from places of worship to museums and family homes located in cities, suburbs, forests and deserts.

All of them are already on the US historical heritage list, have strong security measures and are protected against alterations, demolitions or other inappropriate modifications.

One of Wright's buildings belongs to a local government, while the others are in the hands of non-governmental organizations, foundations and individuals.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, which is in charge of preserving the legacy of the master of American architecture, noted that Wright's collection of buildings is the first representation of modern American architecture on the World Heritage List.

The US submitted 11 Wright buildings to be included on the World Heritage List in 2015, but later revised and resubmitted eight works by the architect for evaluation this time.
