Time-travelling Big Bang show launches in Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain, Jul 9 (efe-epa).- The “Universe Room”, a permanent exhibition which takes visitors on a time-traveling exercise to the origins of the universe with a recreation of the Big Bang, launched on Tuesday at the CosmoCaixa

Spanning 3,500 square meters, myriad interactive scientific and artistic reproductions and devices make up the renovation of the permanent room of the museum, which represents the "core" of the CosmoCaixa program.

"The objective of the Universe Room is that the visitor is the key actor of the interaction through an aesthetic experience that is easy to understand," Javier Hidalgo, head of science exhibitions at the La Caixa Foundation said at the presentation.

The new Universe room is divided into three large spaces - Kosmos, Evolution and Borders -over which an ominous globe with a 2.6-meter diameter, the second largest in the world after the one in Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation of Japan, hovers over the crowd.

The reproduction of the Earth, as well as offering the obvious geographic data, serves the purpose of raising awareness over the environmental issues the planet faces.

Maps showing CO2 and nitrogen dioxide emissions, air temperature or waste level, feature on the interactive sphere.

As visitors journey through the three main spaces, they are met with a key artifact in each one.

Punters are greeted by a giant bell as the enter the Kosmos space, and in which, through a three-dimensional image, the evolution of the universe starting 15,000 million years ago unfolds.

The Evolution room highlights a bio-reactor in which algae grow with the help of light and nutrients as a way of promoting biomass as a sustainable science for the future that would use plants for the production of energy.

Finally, a large brain exhibits the functioning of the human vascular system in the Borders room.

"Audiovisual creativity has been accompanied by a very important element: scientific rigor," Tatxo Benet, a Mediapro representative, the company that has designed the project, said.

"The old room, which was created in 2004, lacked story style, story and journey, was a bit chaotic.

"The new space is designed to age well and the renovation at a technological level has been very high," Hidalgo said.

With this in mind, the Foundation has worked with national and international experts since 2010, with the mission of renewing the permanent room and, at the same time, providing it with elements of innovative technology.

"We are proud that CosmoCaixa, which turns 15 years old, continues to be a European benchmark.

“The one million yearly visitors force us to continue to be rigorous and to promote critical thinking," Elisa Durán, deputy general director of the La Caixa Banking Foundation, said. EFE-EPA
