Remakes of iconic games steal limelight at Tokyo Game Show

By María Roldán

Chiba, Japan, Sep 12 (efe-epa).- A nostalgic look to the past and the avant-garde merged for the 2019 edition of the world's largest video games fair in Asia which opened its doors on Thursday.

The 23rd Tokyo Game Show launched with 5G network and with the spotlight on the reinvention of acclaimed franchises including Final Fantasy and Resident Evil as well as the latest from Japanese video game designer Hideo Kojima.

The fair was the largest to date with 2,417 booths distributed across 11 pavilions of the Makuhari Messe Convention Center in Chiba, east of Tokyo.

One of the highlights of the day saw Kojima take to the PlayStation stage for about 50 minutes to showcase his latest game Death Stranding, a cinematic adventure featuring actors Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) and Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal).

Several more demonstrations are planned for the weekend when the fair will open to the public.

"Until the end of the year we will be very focused on Death Stranding, the first title he has launched since he formed his own company, Kojima Productions," Makiko Noda of the Sony Communications Department told Efe.

The game will launch on 8 November.

The Japanese digital games giant, which is currently developing the successor to PlayStation 4, did not disclose any news about the console and Noda hinted that no details would be officially unveiled until 2020.

Another highlight was the remake of Final Fantasy VII.

Punters got a sneak peek of the trailer and, if patient enough to withstand the long queues, were able to test the game at both the PlayStation space and in the developer's booth, Square Enix.

Half an hour after doors opened, the waiting time to get their hands on the controllers of the reinvented Cloud Strife adventure at the Sony desktop platform was of four hours. The game will be released on 3 March 2020.

Some Resident Evil fans hoping to test the new Project Resistance were left disappointed after finding out it was necessary to book in advance to play the game in a private room.

Iceborne, the first expansion of Monster Hunter World, was also heavily in demand and around an hour and a half after doors opened there were no more available slots to test it.

Other titles gamers could get stuck into included Dragon Ball: Kakarot, where the player can enjoy the adventures of Goku in an open world, the new Medievil or the deadly Nioh two.

Despite the record volume of booths, there were fewer companies represented this year, 655 compared to the 668 that attended last year.

Most of the developers and distributors are based in Japan (350), while foreign companies (305), especially Western industry giants, seem to have lost some interest in an event increasingly focused on the Asian market.

In 2018, 330 foreign companies participated in the event; in 2016 there were 345.

As has happened in previous years, the launch days on Thursday and Friday are exclusively open to members of the press, accredited media and business representatives.

During these first two days meetings are held to close distribution licenses or find investors for emerging projects.

In this sense, the developers of indie titles have had a notable presence at the event, especially with regards to mobile games.

Software for smartphones accounts for 27% of the 1,522 titles represented at the 2019 fair, a similar percentage to the one registered the previous year. EFE-EPA
