United Kingdom war veterans mark 99th Armistice Day with ceremony in London

London, Nov 11 (efe-epa).- War veterans from the United Kingdom's armed forces and members of associations dedicated to keeping alive the memory of the sacrifice made by the country during World War One gathered in London on Saturday to commemorate the 99th anniversary of an armistice that ended the massively destructive conflict.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 the armistice came into effect, silencing guns that had begun firing four year earlier and caused the largest loss of human life to arms the world had seen to that date.

The war was, along with the Civil War in the United States, one of the first truly mechanized armed clashes and it cost its participating nations millions of lives.

The First World War, also known as the Great War or the War to End All Wars, was a global conflict originating in southeastern Europe that lasted from July 28, 1914 to Nov. 11, 1918.

More than 70 million military participants were mobilized, mainly in Europe, in one of the largest wars the world has ever seen.

The United Kingdom lost close to a million of its youth, a whole generation, often described as the flower of the island nation, a blow the country found it very hard to recover from.

Most families were touched by the loss of a loved one or a family friend.

Members of the Western Front Association marked Armistice Day on Saturday at a ceremony at the Cenotaph, a monument erected in London to mark the sacrifice made by the nation.
