Puigdemont to hold press conference in Brussels

Brussels, Dec 6 (efe-epa).- The former president of Catalonia will hold a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday, along with his four former advisors, after the Spanish Supreme Court agreed to withdraw the European Arrests Warrants (EAW) against them.

Carles Puigdemont, who will be accompanied by Lluis Puig, Toni Comin, Meritxell Serret and Clara Ponsati, will hold a press conference in a hotel in Brussels at 1pm local time.

Paul Bekaert, the Belgian lawyer who represents Puigdemont, said that the former Catalan president will not leave Belgium despite the withdrawal of the EAW.

Spanish Judge Pablo Llarena considered that the EAW issued by the National High Court should be withdrawn, for the whole case is now taken by him and a single action is required since otherwise "the continence of the case could be broken and it could lead the process to contradictory and divergent answers for different participants."

For its part, the Belgian Prosecutor's Office, which has already confirmed receiving the order from Judge Pablo Llarena, announced that it will ask the court of first instance to withdraw the Spanish EAW on a date yet to be determined.

The Belgian Prosecutor's Office said that the judge will have to dismiss the case and withdraw the precautionary measures to which they were subjected in Belgium.

Puigdemont and his former advisers have sought refuge in the Belgian capital for more than a month while the Spanish Justice acted against all members of the Catalan autonomous government, which was dissolved by the Spanish government on Oct. 27 for promoting an independence process.
