Kenya uses cutting-edge technology to export agriculture products to the EU

Nairobi, Apr 16 (efe-epa).- Several members of the European Parliament have visited the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (Kephis), which uses cutting-edge technology to ensure agricultural products reach the desired quality to be exported to the European Union, EFE reported Monday.

Kephis, considered one of the most advanced analysis centers for agricultural products in East Africa, not only analyzes samples of agricultural products, but also samples of earth and water.

"I can analyze every metal element in the periodic table in an hour," said Kenyan scientist Bernard Okonda.

Okonda said the heavy metal detector machine was able to see three types of pollutants in the past but now it detected many more.

Khephis, located in Karen, a neighborhood in the Kenyan capital, collects and analyzes product samples from across the country.

"With the financing of the laboratory and all the equipment, the European Union could actually help Kenya to be able to penetrate the European market," Hubert Perr, the head of development cooperation of the EU delegation to Kenya, said.

Agriculture is one of the main fields focused on in Kenya, as it accounts for around 30 percent of the country's gross domestic product, and an estimation of 75 percent of the population directly or indirectly depend on it.

In this large sector, Kenya eyes the EU, which imports 80 percent of the total agricultural exports of the African country, which means 300,000 tons and an income of about 900 million euros ($1 billion) per year.
