Brussels, May 16 (efe-epa).- The chairman and CEO of Facebook has accepted to testify before the European Parliament over the social media site's use of personal data, the chamber's leader said Wednesday.

In a statement, Antonio Tajani said Mark Zuckerberg's testimony would help experts analyze the protection of personal data, especially how it could impact elections in the bloc.

"Web giants must be responsible for the content they publish, including blatantly false news and illegal content," he said, adding: "Freedom must always be accompanied by responsibility."

In Apr., Zuckerberg testified before the United States Senate over Facebook granting political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica access to users' data, which was used to create psychological profiles of voters and push campaigns in support of then-candidate Donald Trump and Brexit.

He is expected to appear before the EP sometime next week.
