The EU calls for urgent action to strengthen cybersecurity

Brussels, Oct 10 (efe-epa).- The European Commission on Wednesday called for urgent action in the wake of a spike in cyberattacks and urged member states to adopt measures to strengthen cybersecurity across the bloc, according to a report by the executive cabinet.

The report published by the EC, "A Europe that Protects: Commission calls for decisive action on security priorities", outlines the measures that would need to be put into place by the 28 member states to ensure the formation of a Security Union.

"Strengthening our external borders, improving information exchange and making all our data systems interoperable and protecting our citizens online as well as on the ground – there is no time to waste," Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said.

"It's time for those promises to be turned into reality, paving the way towards an effective and genuine Security Union," he added.

According to the EC, the European Union was subject to 4,000 daily cyberattacks in 2016.

The report said that, of the 30 security-focused policies that had been submitted by the commission in recent years, only eight had been implemented, the remaining 22 awaited approval of the European Parliament and Council.

The EC said it was essential to prioritize the approval and implementation of security policies prior to the European elections in May.
