Coca Cola Foundation unveils collection of Iberian art at Spanish exhibition

Alicante (Spain), Feb 6 (efe-epa).- An exhibition of some 50 works by prominent contemporary artists from Spain and Portugal that have been collected by the Spanish branch of the affluent Coca Cola Foundation opened at two locations in Spain's southeastern city of Alicante, the foundation's director told EFE on Wednesday.

Juan José Litrán said the exhibition, comprising works from various disciplines such as painting, video, photography, sculpture and drawing, would be on show at the city's Museum of Contemporary Art and at an exhibition space at the port city's former fish market which is now converted into a gallery space.

"This is a unique opportunity for Alicante," Litrán said at the event launch, explaining that the exhibition was born out of "a desire, a dream and the hard work of a regional corporation that decided to put its weight behind giving the city cultural content."

"Construyendo Historias," (Building Stories), a multidisciplinary exhibition opened with the aim of showcasing the broad range of trends, diversity of techniques and myriad artistic disciplines that the contemporary art scene has to offer, he said.

The show, which features many artworks that were purchased at ARCO, Spain's prestigious International Contemporary Art Fair, was curated by Lorena Martínez de Corral and was split across two sites, MACA and the architectural jewel that once housed the city's fish market.

Martínez de Corral told EFE that some of the more prominent contemporary Spanish artists featured included painter Juan Uslé who drenches his abstract canvasses with handmade colors, José María Sicilia well-known for his use of wax and printers' inks in his paintings and Secundino Hernández's abstract and figurative works featuring scraped gouache and acrylic applied directly from the tube in reference to American legend Jackson Pollock.

Spanish artist Isidro Blasco, who explores concepts of perception and space through architecture, photography and installation, has an artwork featured alongside one by his father, Arcadi.

Highlights include an installation by Alicia Martín, work by photographer José Manuel Ballester who was conferred the Spanish national photography award in 2010 for his innovative use of light and his unique interpretation of architectural spaces, and a video piece by Manu Arregui, well-known for his use of three-dimensional animation and sculpture and a recurrent reflexion on identity, sexuality and the body.

"Construyendo Historias" will run until April 9.
