London, Feb 8 (EFE).- Oscar-nominated English actor Albert Finney, one of the most recognizable screen presences of his generation, has died aged 82 following a short illness, his family said on Friday.

Finney, born on May 9, 1936, in Salford, northern England, appeared in some 60 movies that in many cases had an important impact at the time, such as "Two for the Road" (1967), "Erin Brockovich" (2000) and "Skyfall" (2012).

"Albert Finney, aged 82, passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side," a statement from Finney's family said.

"The family request privacy at this sad time," the statement added.

His first steps in acting were on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company, although he soon delved into film, joining the Free Cinema, a movement that emerged during the 1950s in the United Kingdom with the aim of promoting documentary films that had not been made with the intention of becoming box-office hits.

English filmmaker Tony Robinson cast Finney for his first lead role in "The Entertainer," (1960).

Finney rapidly made a name for himself with his versatility and ability to mimic accents and voices by taking on vastly different roles, from embodying Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot in "Murder on the Orient Express," alongside American actress Lauren Bacall, to becoming war-time British prime minister Winston Churchill for English filmmaker Richard Loncraine's television movie "The Gathering Storm" (2002).

English crime novelist Christie later confessed that Finney's depiction of the Belgian detective was the closest to how she had imagined Poirot.

The talented actor received his first Oscar Academy Awards Nomination for his role in "Tom Jones" (1963) directed by his long-term collaborator Richardson, although Finney opted for a sailing holiday over attending the ceremony.

The actor was later nominated a further four times for his lead roles in "Murder on the Orient Express," (1975), "The Dresser," (1984), "Under the Volcano," (1985), and for his supporting role in "Erin Brockovich."

The performer, who was much loved for his booming deep voice, was awarded three Golden Globes for his roles in "Tom Jones" (1964), "Scrooge" (1971) and "The Gathering Storm."

Finney's last feature film saw him become Kincade in "Skyfall" (2012), a James Bond movie directed by Sam Mendes.
