Albanian artist unveils surreal US president Donald Trump artwork

Tirana, Albania, Feb 22 (efe-epa).- An exhibition featuring 46 portraits of United States President Donald Trump in extraordinary poses, including one where he is cradling supreme North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with what appears to be a missile perched in his crotch, opened in the Albanian capital Friday.

Albanian painter Avni Delvina, a Trump fan, launched his exhibition of paintings, which had already done the rounds on social media to much acclaim, at the National History Museum in Tirana.

"The Donald" is presented as a homage to the American business mogul and politician with a choice of 46 canvasses, a hint to the artist's hopes for the president to get re-elected for another term which would be the 46th presidential mandate, the artist told Albanian media.

Among the surreal canvasses, there is a painting depicting Trump as the Mona Lisa, with his signature pout and platinum locks, and another that shows the US president pinned to a cross with a rippling American flag in the background.

Another canvas features Russian president Vladimir Putin pealing off what looks like a rubber mask of the American leader – perhaps a nod to the ongoing allegations that Russia meddles in the US elections that saw Trump rise to victory.

Next to that in the gallery space, is a picture of a post-apocalyptic cityscape. In the foreground, a forlorn man dressed in the colors of the stars and stripes sits next to a copy of the "Evening Standard" newspaper emblazoned with the headline: "Trump triumph shocks the world."

Visitors could also marvel at Trump's face plastered onto the iconic ancient Roman marble sculpture "Laocoön and His Sons." In this version, Trump is being harassed by the media: The New York Times, The Washington Globe and a television screen with the CNN logo weighing down his right shoulder in what was an artistic reference to his obsession with so-called Fake News.

In one painting, the US president is in the Skanderbeg Square, the main plaza in Tirana, except here it is frozen over and given a decidedly hostile aesthetic, perhaps a reference to how many people feel about the politician.

This is not the first expression of admiration for the US or one of its presidents in the Balkan nation.

The capital named a street after 43rd US president George W. Bush in 2008 following his historic visit.

Fushë-Krujë, a small town 20.9 kilometers (12.9 miles) north of the capital, also unveiled a statue of Bush in 2011.

Delvina, the brains behind the Trump exhibition, visited the exhibition on Friday for the official press launch.

"The Donald" exhibition will be open until Feb 23 at the National History Museum in Tirana, Albania.
